Six students were injured Thursday afternoon when a school bus from Dillard Charter Academy crashed into a low railroad bridge in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The single-vehicle incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the bridge on North Carolina Street near West Vine Street, also known as Carolina Street and U.S. Highway 117.
The bus carried nine students, the driver, and a bus monitor at the time of the crash. Six students were transported to UNC Health Wayne with non-life-threatening injuries and were released from the hospital Thursday night, according to a hospital spokesperson. The driver was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, but no updates on their condition were available late Thursday. The bus monitor was not reported injured.
Goldsboro police and fire departments responded to the scene, where the front of the bus was left crumpled and wedged under the bridge, which stands just 7 feet 6 inches high. The bystander video showed the severe damage to the vehicle's front end against a support beam. Witnesses described a chaotic scene. "It was a very devastating scene, though," said Whitney Dixon, who saw the crash. "Seeing the scene, it was so horrible."
Authorities have not determined the exact cause, but the low clearance of the bridge appears to have played a role. Goldsboro Police Chief Michael West confirmed there were nine students on the bus, and police stated the children's injuries were not life-threatening. Public Information Officer LaToya Henry said the crash happened around 4 p.m. at the bridge location. Some witnesses suggested the bus may have been traveling faster than the 25 mph speed limit.
Dillard Charter Academy issued a statement thanking first responders. "We extend our sincere gratitude to the Goldsboro Police Department and Wayne EMS for their swift response and support," the school said. "Please keep all passengers, and especially the bus monitor, in your thoughts and prayers during this time."
The bridge has a history of incidents involving oversized vehicles, including previous crashes with U-Haul trucks. It was unclear if this was the bus's regular route. The crash remains under investigation by Goldsboro police.
