The U.S. Army announced Wednesday that it is awarding up to $2.2 billion to five companies to build and operate nuclear microreactors at bases in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, and New York.
The selections fall under the service's Janus program, which aims to provide resilient, on-site power independent of commercial grids. Officials said the effort will strengthen energy security for critical infrastructure and support global power projection.
The five companies and their assigned bases are Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; BWXT Advanced Technologies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Texas; Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum, New York.
The milestone-based contracts use Other Transaction Authority agreements spanning fiscal years 2027 through 2031. The Army expects private investment from the firms to help deliver more than 20 microreactors across Department of Defense installations.
Radiant Industries disclosed that its portion totals up to $750 million for 15 Kaleidos reactors. The program targets initial operation of at least one reactor by September 30, 2028.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said the awards accelerate delivery of safe, reliable baseload power. Officials noted that reactors will comply with environmental and safety standards but fall under Army regulation rather than the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The initiative builds on prior executive direction to advance military nuclear power. It positions the Army to reduce reliance on diesel backups and vulnerable external grids while promoting American industrial capacity in advanced nuclear technology.
