Authorities are treating a reported ransom note demanding millions in Bitcoin for the safe return of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, as a key lead in the investigation. The message reportedly includes two deadlines, Thursday at 5 p.m. local time and February 9, warning that demands would change and a “more serious consequence” would follow if they are not met.
TMZ and KGUN 9 reported receiving the alleged ransom email, which law enforcement has confirmed contains two deadlines and highly specific, sensitive details. According to KOLD 13 News reporter Mary Coleman, investigators believe the information included is something “only someone who was holding her for ransom would know.” Coleman said the message immediately raised red flags, prompting her newsroom to forward it to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, where detectives requested additional information to help trace the IP address and identify those responsible. Sheriff Chris Nanos said his office is “aware” of the reported notes and is “taking all tips and leads very seriously,” though authorities have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the messages.
On Wednesday evening, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released an emotional video plea addressing the ransom reports and urging anyone holding their mother to come forward. “We want to thank all of you for the prayers for our beloved mom,” Savannah said. “As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk.” She added, “However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”
Savannah also spoke directly to her mother, saying, “Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley, He is with you. Everyone is looking for you … We will not rest.” Her sister Annie Guthrie echoed the plea: “Mama, if you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you.” The video concluded with a simple message: “Bring her home.”
Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night after being dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home and failed to appear at church Sunday morning. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her safe recovery or the arrest and conviction of those involved. Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke said FBI agents from Phoenix are working alongside the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Nanos reiterated that no suspects or persons of interest have been identified and stressed that the case remains an active investigation, with heightened concern due to Nancy’s need for daily medication.
President Donald Trump announced that he spoke with Savannah Guthrie and said federal authorities are “deploying all resources to get her mother home safely.” Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.
