The Mummy 4, which has yet to receive an official title, will see Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. The pair first starred together in 1999’s The Mummy and reprised their roles in 2001’s The Mummy Returns.
Fraser returned for a third installment, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but Weisz did not join him. In her absence, Maria Bello played Evelyn.
The upcoming sequel will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who previously helmed the fifth and sixth Scream films as well as Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
The screenplay will be written by David Coggeshall, known for Orphan: First Kill and The Family Plan.
Fraser previously teased that the new sequel will fulfill a long-held vision he had for the franchise. “The one I wanted to make is forthcoming,” he told the Associated Press in November. “And I've been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It's time to give the fans what they want.”
Fraser also indicated that Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was not the sequel he originally envisioned. “The one I wanted to make was never made,” he said. “The third one was a model of how can I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together, and we went to China.”
Although Fraser’s return marks his first appearance in the franchise in two decades, Universal has continued to develop the property. The studio attempted a franchise reboot in 2017 with The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, which was intended to launch the interconnected “Dark Universe.”
The franchise has also continued through spin-offs centered on Mathayus, also known as the Scorpion King. The character was first portrayed by Dwayne Johnson in The Mummy Returns. Johnson later headlined the 2002 theatrical spinoff The Scorpion King, followed by four direct-to-video sequels featuring different actors, the most recent of which was released in 2018.
