Brittany Spears, 44, was arrested Wednesday night in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence. The California Highway Patrol took her into custody around 9:30 p.m. in Westlake Village, near her residence.

Spears was formally charged around 3 a.m. Thursday and released from jail at approximately 6 a.m. Authorities took her to a hospital to have blood drawn in order to determine her blood alcohol content. The vehicle she had been driving was towed from the scene.

During processing at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Spears was reportedly “crying a lot,” according to those on scene.

A spokesperson for Spears called the incident “completely inexcusable,” describing it as unfortunate but emphasizing that steps will be taken to comply with the law.

Her manager, Cade Hudson, said Spears intends to address the situation responsibly and take measures toward necessary change in her life. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” Hudson said, noting that her children will continue to spend time with her and that loved ones are working on a plan to support her well-being.

The arrest adds to a series of personal challenges for the singer, who remains a high-profile figure in the music industry. Authorities have not released further details about potential court appearances or upcoming legal proceedings related to the DUI charge.

Spears had been released, and her legal team is expected to provide updates on her next steps, including compliance with court requirements and personal support measures.
