Warren Buffett said he has not spoken with Bill Gates since renewed scrutiny over Gates’ past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to light.
In an interview, Buffett said he has avoided contact with Gates “since the whole thing was unveiled,” adding that it does not make sense to engage further until more details are clarified. Buffett, who has donated billions to the Gates Foundation, indicated he is now reconsidering his future involvement.
“I’ll wait and see what unfolds,” Buffett said, noting he has not made a decision on whether to continue his financial support. He also emphasized that his role in the foundation was limited to providing funding and that he had no involvement in its operations.
Buffett said he does not believe Gates was involved in Epstein’s criminal activities, stating he does not think Gates had anything to do with “girls or the island or anything like that.”
Documents released by the Justice Department show that Gates and Epstein met multiple times after Epstein’s 2008 conviction, reportedly discussing philanthropic initiatives. Additional materials referenced photos of Gates with unidentified women and emails attributed to Epstein suggesting further personal matters, which Gates has denied.
Gates has previously acknowledged meeting Epstein beginning in 2011, saying he hoped to connect with potential donors for his foundation. He has since described those meetings as a mistake and expressed regret over the relationship.
Buffett, 95, also dismissed any connection of his own to Epstein, calling him a “sensational con man” who exploited the weaknesses of powerful individuals.
The comments mark a notable distancing between two of the world’s most prominent philanthropists as questions surrounding Epstein’s network continue to resurface.
