After hosting the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Chicago has formally submitted bids to host the DNC again in both 2028 and 2032. The dual bids are being coordinated by a coalition that includes Gov. JB Pritzker’s office, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration, and a dedicated host committee, signaling an aggressive push to cement Chicago as a recurring hub for major Democratic political events.
According to multiple local media reports, the city has been working for months to prepare competitive proposals through a group operating as “Development Now for Chicago,” which includes elected officials, business leaders, and civic stakeholders. Supporters point to Chicago’s convention infrastructure, hotel capacity, and transit access, highlighted during the 2024 DNC at the United Center, as proof the city can reliably manage large-scale national gatherings while delivering economic benefits through tourism and job creation.
A potential 2028 convention in Chicago could also carry political significance for Gov. Pritzker, a prominent national Democrat frequently mentioned as a future presidential contender. Hosting the party’s convention in his home state during a likely competitive primary cycle would provide increased visibility and influence, a dynamic conservatives view as emblematic of insider-driven party politics.
The bids come even as critics continue to spotlight Chicago’s ongoing challenges, including high crime rates, budget pressures, and strains caused by migrant inflows, issues that drew national attention during preparations for the 2024 convention. While Democratic officials argue the city’s deep-blue electorate and union support make it a dependable choice, conservatives warn that returning the DNC to Chicago risks further exposing what they describe as the consequences of long-standing progressive governance.
The Democratic National Committee is expected to weigh Chicago’s proposals against bids from other major cities in the coming years, evaluating logistics, security plans, and fundraising commitments before making a final decision.
