Dominiq Ponder, 23, quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, died Sunday morning following a single-car crash in Boulder County, Colorado, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m., when Ponder, driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3, lost control while navigating a curve. The vehicle crossed the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail, collided with an electrical line pole, went down an embankment, and caught fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities indicated that speed is suspected to have played a role, and a full investigation is ongoing.
“Fernando Lovo and the entire CU Athletics family are devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” the athletic director said in a statement, per ESPN. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
Ponder, originally from Opa Locka, Florida, was a third-year sophomore who joined Colorado after transferring from Bethune-Cookman University. During the 2025 season, he appeared in two contests, recording one pass attempt and two rushes. He did not see playing time in the 2024 campaign.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders posted on Twitter, “Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all who knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1.”
Ponder’s passing is a profound loss for the Buffaloes program, teammates, and the university community, who remembered him for his leadership, determination, and presence both on and off the field.
