Costco is preparing to roll out online ordering for custom cakes and deli trays, ending a decades-old system that required customers to visit stores in person to complete paper forms.

Under the new system, members will be able to place bakery and deli orders directly through the company’s website and mobile app. The change is part of what executives described as a broader digital overhaul aimed at eliminating outdated processes and improving convenience.

Chief Executive Officer Ron Vachris said the company has responded to customer feedback about inefficiencies in the ordering process. He noted that several features once considered “clunky” are being transitioned to digital platforms, with early adoption rates described as strong.

The upcoming feature is expected to allow customers to select from a catalog of sheet cakes and customizable options, including different sizes, shapes, flavors, designs, and personalized inscriptions. Deli tray ordering will also be incorporated into the same system.

While the company has not announced a firm nationwide launch date, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported that the “Order Grocery/Bakery” feature is anticipated to be available in the app by the end of 2026. If fulfillment timelines mirror the current process, customers can expect orders to be ready within 24 to 48 hours after submission.

The shift to digital ordering is likely to benefit members who travel significant distances to reach warehouse locations, eliminating the need for an additional trip solely to place an order.

Costco has increasingly invested in technology upgrades as it competes in a retail environment where online convenience plays a growing role in consumer expectations.
