During a Saturday appearance on Saturday in America on the Fox News Channel, Sen. John Fetterman acknowledged that Democrats were wrong to advocate for ending the Senate filibuster.
“I campaigned on it, too. So, we were very wrong about that, to nuke the filibuster, and we should really humble ourselves,” Fetterman said. “We wanted to eliminate it, now we love it.”
Fetterman thanked the program for airing past clips of Democrats calling to abolish the legislative tool, which requires 60 votes in the Senate to advance most legislation. His comments reflect a reversal from prior Democratic efforts to change Senate rules in order to advance voting legislation and other priorities when the party held unified control in Washington.
The Pennsylvania Democrat also signaled openness to voter ID laws, saying the idea is not unreasonable. Referencing the SAVE Act, he added that Republicans do not even have full support within their own ranks on the measure.
In a separate segment, Fetterman sharply criticized elements of his own party over what he described as growing alignment with anti-Israel and pro-Hamas voices.
“There’s a rot in my party, standing with pro-Hamas” individuals, he said, specifically calling out Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as an example of a lawmaker too eager to criticize Israel.
Fetterman also condemned progressive commentator Hasan Piker, accusing Democrats and media figures of platforming what he characterized as antisemitic and pro-Hamas rhetoric.
He defended Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza, rejecting claims of genocide and arguing there should be no conditions placed on U.S. aid to the Jewish state. At the same time, he questioned why more Democrats have not forcefully condemned Iran’s execution of protesters.
“Stand with Israel,” Fetterman said. “That’s our special ally.”
