Disgraced attorney Michael Avenatti has been transferred from federal prison to a halfway house in Hollywood as he continues serving his sentence for a series of criminal convictions.
Avenatti is expected to remain at the residential facility until September 2028 as part of the final stage of his sentence.
Once a prominent figure known for representing adult film actress Stormy Daniels and for his criticism of President Donald Trump, Avenatti was later convicted in multiple cases involving fraud, extortion, and theft from clients.
In 2021, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for an extortion scheme targeting Nike, in which prosecutors said he attempted to secure a $25 million payment. In a separate case, he received a 48-month sentence in 2022 for defrauding a client.
Altogether, Avenatti was ordered to serve more than 11 years in prison and pay nearly $6 million in restitution.
As part of his placement in a halfway house, he must comply with specific conditions, including participation in mental health programs and remaining free of controlled substances.
Legal challenges related to his convictions have continued during his incarceration. In 2024, the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in a case involving allegations that he misappropriated nearly $300,000 in book proceeds intended for Daniels.
Avenatti had represented Daniels in litigation related to allegations of a past relationship with Trump, which Trump has denied.
