OpenAI announced it will shut down its video generation platform Sora, just months after launching the tool in 2024, without providing a clear explanation for the decision.
In a statement, the company thanked users who created and shared content on the platform, acknowledging the disappointment surrounding the move and promising more details on timelines and how users can preserve their work.
The shutdown comes shortly after Disney unveiled a reported $1 billion partnership with OpenAI that would have allowed Sora users to create “fan-inspired” videos using characters from major franchises like Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Some of that content was expected to be featured on Disney+ as part of the deal.
That agreement is now effectively over. Disney confirmed it is ending the partnership following OpenAI’s decision to exit the standalone Sora platform.
In a statement, the company said it respects OpenAI’s shift in priorities while emphasizing its continued interest in exploring artificial intelligence in ways that protect intellectual property and creators’ rights.
Sora had drawn significant attention and criticism after the release of its second-generation model, with concerns from Hollywood over potential misuse, including deepfakes and copyright violations.
The abrupt shutdown has sparked speculation online about possible legal or business pressures behind the decision, though no such claims have been confirmed.
Despite ending Sora as a standalone app, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated the company is not abandoning AI video technology entirely, suggesting future development may continue in a different form.
