In recent months, two Chicago-area teachers have made headlines for their political expressions outside the classroom, but the starkly different responses from their schools underscore a troubling pattern of ideological favoritism in public education.
Lucy Martinez, a K-8 S.T.E.M. teacher at Nathan Hale Elementary School, gained notoriety in October 2025 after a video surfaced showing her at a "No Kings" protest mocking the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
In the clip, Martinez pointed her finger to her neck in a gun-like gesture, interpreted as referencing Kirk's fatal gunshot wound. The backlash was intense, prompting the school to temporarily shut down its website and social media accounts amid threats and public outrage.
Despite calls for her dismissal, Nathan Hale Principal Dawn Iles-Gomez defended Martinez in a letter to parents, portraying her as a victim of threats without addressing the incident or announcing any discipline. As of February 2026, Martinez remains employed and is listed on the school's reinstated website as a K-8 S.T.E.M. teacher.
In contrast, James Heidorn, a veteran physical education teacher in the West Chicago area, was forced to resign in February 2026 after posting just two words on his personal Facebook account: "Go ICE," expressing support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The post drew swift condemnation from community members, elected officials, and even the local mayor, leading to a pressure campaign that Heidorn described as "devastating" to his 14-year career.
Heidorn argued the comment was not aimed at students or his district, but he ultimately stepped down amid the uproar, prompting a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $60,000 in support.
This disparity perfectly illustrates an anti-conservative bias in the public school system. Martinez's action—mocking the violent death of a prominent conservative figure—aligns with left-leaning activism and resulted in protection and continued employment.
Heidorn's brief show of support for a federal agency often criticized by progressives, however, led to his swift professional downfall.
Such inconsistent handling of free speech erodes trust in educational institutions, suggesting that political viewpoints are not treated equally, with conservative expressions facing harsher scrutiny and consequences.
