Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, 68, and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, have repurchased a $27 million estate in Montecito, California, less than two years after abandoning the state for a farm in England following Donald Trump’s presidential victory. Sources told Fox News Digital that the couple’s return is temporary, suggesting they intend to retreat again to the U.K. after the winter season.
The move highlights a pattern of celebrity elites fleeing the U.S. when political outcomes do not align with their preferences. DeGeneres openly admitted that Trump’s election prompted their permanent relocation overseas. In a BBC interview, she recalled, “We got here the day before the election and I was like, ‘He got in,’ and we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
Despite claiming to enjoy the “simpler way of life” in the Cotswolds, DeGeneres maintained connections to California, expressing nostalgia for the weather and horse scene. Sources note that she has largely remained private while in England, sharing occasional glimpses of farm life on social media.
The couple sold their previous Montecito estate in August 2024 before relocating, moving Portia’s horses and establishing a farm life that included chickens and even briefly, sheep. Yet, after less than two years abroad, they have invested heavily in returning to Southern California, underscoring the transient nature of their escape and the tendency of wealthy celebrities to relocate based on political dissatisfaction.
While DeGeneres and de Rossi will temporarily enjoy Montecito’s luxury lifestyle, local observers in the U.K. noted the comedian’s absence in recent months, suggesting that her celebrity status did not translate into community engagement overseas.
The episode reinforces a pattern among Hollywood elites who relocate at the first sign of political disagreement, only to resume their privileged lives in U.S. enclaves when convenient.
