A federal judge in Georgia has ordered the unsealing of documents related to an FBI raid on Fulton County’s main election facility, where 2020 ballots and other election materials were seized in late January. Judge J.P. Boulee, nominated by President Donald Trump in 2019, set a Tuesday deadline for the government to file the materials, including the search warrant affidavit with redactions for non-governmental witnesses.
Boulee noted in his order that while the case was initially filed under seal, both parties agreed to unsealing the docket and motions. “Respondent has stated that it does not oppose the unsealing of the search warrant affidavit and any other papers associated with the warrant subject to the redaction of the names of nongovernmental witnesses,” the judge wrote.
The raid took place Jan. 28 at the Union City facility near Atlanta and focused on records connected to the 2020 general election. A warrant cover sheet obtained by Fulton County authorities indicated that agents sought ballots, tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images, and voter rolls. The seizure included roughly 656 boxes of original election materials, which county officials have since requested to be returned.
Fulton County, a heavily Democratic jurisdiction, drew national attention after the 2020 election. The unsealing of these documents could provide greater transparency into the FBI’s handling of the election materials and the scope of its investigation, which has been closely watched by both lawmakers and the public.
As federal filings move forward, the release of the documents may clarify the evidence collected and the investigative process, potentially fueling ongoing debate over election security and law enforcement oversight in Georgia.
