A massive explosion at a fireworks shop in Xiangyang, Hubei province, killed at least 12 people Wednesday afternoon, marking the second deadly incident during China’s Lunar New Year celebrations. The blast set fire to an area of roughly 50 square meters, which took over an hour to extinguish.

Earlier in the holiday, an explosion in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, killed eight people, reportedly caused by fireworks ignited too close to a store storing large quantities of explosives. The Ministry of Emergency Management issued warnings to supervise fireworks carefully and avoid detonations near stores.

Officials have released few details on either incident and have not publicly identified any suspects or made arrests related to the explosions. Authorities continue to investigate the causes, but the back-to-back incidents underscore the ongoing dangers of fireworks during holiday celebrations in China.
