Florida Republican lawmakers have introduced legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) as Donald J. Trump International Airport, honoring President Trump’s long-standing ties to Palm Beach County and his residence at Mar-a-Lago while sending a symbolic America First message by placing his name on one of the state’s busiest aviation hubs.
The proposal, filed in the Florida House and Senate in late January 2026, would officially change the name of Palm Beach International Airport to Donald J. Trump International Airport. Supporters argue the move recognizes Trump’s decades-long presence in the county, where Mar-a-Lago has served as his primary residence and functioned as the “Winter White House” during his presidency. Lawmakers backing the bill point to Trump’s economic impact on the region through tourism, development, and job creation, as well as his decisive victories in Florida, including his landslide win in 2024.
Palm Beach International Airport, located just minutes from Mar-a-Lago, serves millions of passengers each year and is a major gateway for South Florida. Proponents say the renaming would boost local pride, draw national attention, and reinforce Florida’s status as a stronghold of support for the America First agenda.
The Senate version of the legislation, SB 706, is sponsored by Sen. Debbie Mayfield and would preempt airport naming authority to the state while leaving all other airport names unchanged. The bill specifies that the name change would be contingent upon approval by the Federal Aviation Administration and an agreement between Palm Beach County and President Trump regarding the commercial use of his name.
Palm Beach County representatives spoke in favor of the proposal during a recent Senate Transportation Committee hearing.
“President Trump is a major figure in Florida. He is our first president elected from Florida, and he officially became a Palm Beach County and Florida resident in 2019,” said Nick Iarossi, who also cited Trump’s ownership of Trump International, Trump National Golf Club, and Mar-a-Lago.
“The Palm Beach County Commission voted to rename Southern Boulevard from Palm Beach International Airport to Mar-a-Lago as Donald J. Trump International Boulevard,” Iarossi added. “He has had a major impact not just on our state but here in Palm Beach County, and it is an honor to push forward this legislation.”
Sen. Mayfield echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Trump’s historical and economic significance to Florida.
The House companion bill, HB 919, is being carried by Rep. Meg Weinberger of Palm Beach, one of President Trump’s most vocal supporters in the Florida Legislature.
