Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remains in intensive care at a hospital in Brasília as doctors monitor his recovery from pneumonia, though medical staff reported Sunday that his kidney function has shown signs of improvement.
Bolsonaro, 70, was admitted Friday to DF Star Hospital after being transferred from the prison facility where he is serving a 27-year sentence related to a 2023 coup attempt. Physicians said he was initially hospitalized with a high fever, sweating, and chills.
According to a statement released by the hospital, doctors increased Bolsonaro’s antibiotic treatment on Saturday while continuing to monitor elevated inflammatory markers linked to the infection. Despite the improvement in kidney function, the medical team said the former leader will remain in the intensive care unit while treatment continues.
Bolsonaro governed Brazil from 2019 until 2022 and remains one of the country’s most prominent conservative political figures. After leaving office, he was prosecuted and later convicted on charges that included leading an armed criminal organization and attempting the violent abolition of Brazil’s democratic rule of law. He has denied all wrongdoing.
The former president had been held at a federal police facility in Brasília before authorities transferred him to a larger prison cell earlier this year. In January, officials moved him from the federal police headquarters to expanded accommodations while he serves his sentence.
Family members and political allies have repeatedly petitioned Brazil’s Supreme Court to allow Bolsonaro to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest, citing health concerns and the former president’s history of medical complications.
Bolsonaro has experienced recurring health problems since surviving a stabbing attack during the 2018 presidential campaign. The incident required emergency surgery and led to multiple hospitalizations in the years that followed, with doctors continuing to monitor long-term complications.
The latest hospitalization comes as Brazil’s political landscape prepares for another election cycle. Bolsonaro’s son, Flávio Bolsonaro, a sitting senator, is expected to mount a presidential campaign later this year against incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Hospital officials said Bolsonaro’s condition remains stable for now, but that he will continue receiving treatment in intensive care while doctors monitor his recovery from the infection.
