British authorities arrested former U.K. ambassador Peter Mandelson on Monday as part of an investigation connected to his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers detained a 72-year-old man at a residence in north London on suspicion of misconduct in public office. In line with British policing policy, the agency did not publicly name the suspect, though Mandelson has previously been identified in connection with the inquiry.

Investigators are examining documents that allegedly suggest Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein roughly 15 years ago. Authorities have not accused the former diplomat of any sexual misconduct.

The probe centers on whether confidential material was improperly disclosed during Mandelson’s tenure in public service. Officials have not released further details about the scope of the investigation or potential next steps.
