Four people were killed and two others critically injured Monday in a four-alarm fire that engulfed a mixed-use building in the Flushing section of Queens, New York, according to officials.
The fire was reported just before 12:30 p.m. at 44-49 College Point Boulevard. Fire Department of New York crews arrived within about four minutes and encountered heavy flames at the scene, FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said.
Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said firefighters found intense fire conditions across all three floors of the structure. The building contained commercial space on the ground floor and approximately five apartments on the upper levels.
During the blaze, three people jumped from the upper floors in an attempt to escape the flames. Another victim was trapped on the second floor and had to be rescued by firefighters using a portable ladder.
Woods said the structure sustained extensive damage as crews battled the fire. Two firefighters also became trapped after a staircase collapsed while they were advancing from the first floor to the second. They were later extricated by fellow firefighters.
Firefighters performed CPR on victims in the street outside the building as emergency responders worked to treat the injured.
FDNY EMS Chief Michael Escobar said nine civilians were affected by the fire. Three victims were initially pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to hospitals in critical condition. Additional victims were taken to hospitals in stable condition.
Five firefighters were also treated and transported to hospitals with injuries described as stable.
In a later update, officials confirmed that four people had died in the fire and two remained in critical condition.
Bonsignore said the first three confirmed victims included two adults and one child. Authorities did not immediately release details about the fourth person who died.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city was mourning the victims of the blaze.
“We’re mourning the loss of four New Yorkers after today’s devastating four-alarm fire in Flushing,” Mamdani said in a statement. “My heart is with their families, loved ones and every neighbor impacted.”
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
