A high-speed TGV train in northern France collided with the trailer of a truck transporting army vehicles near Bully-les-Mines in the Pas-de-Calais region at 6:48 a.m. Tuesday, killing the train driver and injuring 16 passengers. The train was traveling from Dunkirk to Paris and carried 246 passengers at the time of the crash.
Local reports identified the train driver as Claudio di Maggio, a father approaching retirement. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said two of the injured were initially in critical condition but had stabilized by Tuesday afternoon.
The truck driver, a 30-year-old Polish national, was taken into police custody. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident, but early findings indicate that the railroad crossing barriers were functioning properly.
Rail operator SNCF expressed sorrow over the fatality, calling the driver’s death “a trial that deeply affects the entire rail family.” French authorities have launched a full investigation to establish the circumstances behind the collision.
