Georgia Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk announced Wednesday that he will not seek reelection after more than a decade in Congress, becoming the 29th House Republican to opt out of running again in 2026, either for retirement or to pursue other opportunities, as the GOP braces for a challenging midterm cycle.
Loudermilk, who has represented Georgia’s reliably Republican 11th Congressional District since 2015, said he plans to focus on serving his community, state, and nation in new ways while prioritizing time with his family.
“I first ran for election to Congress in 2014 and, as I stated then, representing the people in Congress is a service, not a career,” Loudermilk said in a statement. “Although I continue to have strong support from the people of the Eleventh Congressional District, I believe it is time to contribute to my community, state, and nation in other ways. Therefore, I have decided not to seek re-election at the end of my current term in Congress.”
He added, “I have learned throughout my life that doing what is right is not always easy, convenient, or popular. My wife and I have prayed diligently and discussed this extensively, and while this is not an easy decision, we believe it is the right one. While serving my constituents in Congress ranks among my greatest honors, being a husband, a father, and a grandfather holds even greater importance to me, and at this time, I wish to spend more dedicated time with my family.”
Loudermilk has been a prominent conservative voice in the House and currently serves as chair of the Select Subcommittee to Investigate the Remaining Questions Surrounding January 6, a role he advanced with support from President Donald Trump.
His departure adds to a growing list of Republicans stepping aside ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, raising concerns among conservatives about holding the House majority. While Loudermilk’s district remains solidly Republican, the open seat is expected to draw increased attention as the GOP works to retain control of the chamber.
