Jason Hughes, 40, a math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia, died Friday night after being struck by a pickup truck while responding to a prank outside his home. Around 11:40 p.m., Hughes stepped outside after five teens covered his trees in toilet paper. The group fled in two vehicles, and Hughes stumbled into the roadway, where 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace hit him with his truck.

Wallace and others at the scene attempted to assist Hughes until paramedics transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later died. Wallace was taken into custody and faces first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving charges, along with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and littering. Four additional teens, all 18, were charged with misdemeanor trespass and littering. Georgia law carries a three-to-15-year sentence for first-degree vehicular homicide involving serious traffic violations.

Hughes had spent eight years at North Hall and previously taught for a decade in Gwinnett County. His wife, Laura, also teaches math at the school. Beyond teaching, he directed the North Hall chapter of NG3, a mentorship organization focused on building character in high school students through community service.

The incident comes shortly after the Hall County School District warned parents on Facebook about prom-season pranks, known locally as “Junior/Senior Wars,” which have caused property damage in past years. Authorities have not disclosed why Hughes’ home was targeted, and the investigation remains ongoing.
