Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein says life in prison has become “hell” as he remains incarcerated following multiple convictions for sexual assault and rape.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Tuesday, Weinstein said he spends most of his time isolated at Rikers Island in New York, claiming it is too dangerous for him to interact with other inmates.
“It’s too dangerous for me to be around anyone else,” Weinstein said. “Other inmates get to go to the yard. But every time I’m out there, I feel like I’m under siege.”
He described one incident in which he said another inmate struck him while he was waiting to use a phone. “I fell on the floor, bleeding everywhere. I was hurt really badly,” he said.
Weinstein was once one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers, known for films such as Shakespeare in Love and Pulp Fiction. His career collapsed in 2017 after investigative reports by The New Yorker and The New York Times detailed accusations from multiple women, helping ignite the global MeToo movement.
Although his original 2020 New York conviction and 23-year sentence were later overturned, Weinstein was again convicted of two counts of sexual assault during a retrial in June. Separately, a California court convicted him of rape and sentenced him in 2023 to 16 years in prison, to be served after his New York sentence.
In the interview, Weinstein again denied committing sexual assault, claiming that relationships with several women were consensual and suggesting some accusers pursued legal action for financial gain.
Weinstein, who now uses a wheelchair, also said he has undergone heart surgery and has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Approaching his 74th birthday, he said he fears dying in prison.
“It scares the [expletive] out of me,” Weinstein said. “I’m going to be 74 in March. I don’t want to die in here.”
