Explosions rocked northern Israel on Wednesday evening as Iranian missiles targeted a power plant in Haifa, according to reports from the scene. Smoke rose over the facility following the impact, with debris from intercepted projectiles also cited as causing disruptions.
The strike prompted power outages across multiple neighborhoods in the city, though electricity was quickly restored in most areas by crews from the Israel Electric Corporation. No casualties were immediately reported from the Haifa incident, but the attack heightened fears over Iran's targeting of critical energy infrastructure.
This latest barrage came amid an intensifying exchange of strikes between Iran and Israel. Iran has launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel in recent days, often employing cluster munitions to maximize impact on civilian areas. On Tuesday, cluster munitions detonated over Haifa, damaging homes in the suburbs, while similar attacks injured several in central Israel.
Earlier in the week, around March 19, debris from intercepted Iranian missiles struck electrical infrastructure near Haifa's Bazan oil refinery, leading to temporary shutdowns and minor damage. Iranian state media claimed the strikes targeted energy facilities in retaliation for Israeli attacks on sites including the South Pars gas field and Bushehr nuclear plant.
Israel has intercepted the majority of incoming threats, with the Israel Defense Forces reporting successful defenses against hundreds of projectiles. In response, Israeli and U.S. forces have conducted over 600 strikes on Iranian ballistic missile production and storage sites since the escalation began, including recent hits in Esfahan and Bushehr provinces.
The conflict traces back to Israeli strikes on Iran's Natanz nuclear facility on March 21, following earlier exchanges. Iran has vowed retaliation against energy infrastructure if its own power plants are targeted, escalating risks to regional stability.
Separate Iranian missiles landed near the larger Orot Rabin power station in Hadera on Wednesday, but caused no reported damage. Sirens sounded across major cities, including Tel Aviv, sending millions to shelters.
Casualties remain limited on the Israeli side, with injuries reported from shrapnel and falls during prior attacks. The IDF continues operations to degrade Iran's missile capabilities, amid concerns over broader regional involvement.
