Iran launched a series of missile barrages at Israel on Thursday, with debris from an intercepted projectile striking the Bazan Group oil refinery in the northern city of Haifa. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it targeted refineries in Haifa and Ashdod, along with military sites, using pinpoint strikes.
Israeli officials assessed the impact as minimal. Energy Minister Eli Cohen stated, "The damage to the power grid in the north is localised and not significant," adding that the barrage caused no major harm to infrastructure. A brief power outage lasted about 45 minutes before restoration, and firefighters contained a small fire from the debris with no hazardous material leaks or injuries at the site. Israel's Ministry of Environmental Protection confirmed normal air quality readings.
The Haifa facility, which supplies roughly half of Israel's fuel, had previously sustained a direct Iranian missile hit last June that killed three people and halted operations temporarily. This time, Israel's multilayered air defenses intercepted most incoming threats during the 12 barrages fired between late Wednesday and Thursday afternoon Eastern Time.
The attack came in retaliation for Israeli strikes earlier in the week on Iran's South Pars natural gas field, the world's largest, shared with Qatar, as well as missile sites, air defenses, and naval assets in the Caspian Sea. Iran also broadened its response by hitting energy infrastructure in Gulf allies, including Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG complex—reducing output by 17 percent—Saudi Arabia's SAMREF refinery, and Kuwaiti facilities, escalating risks to global energy supplies.
Crude oil prices have fluctuated wildly amid the conflict, hovering around $100 per barrel after spiking toward $120 early in the war, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. President Donald Trump warned Iran against further attacks on Qatar, threatening to destroy South Pars entirely and noting U.S. forces had no prior knowledge of Israel's gas field operation.
Now in its third week, the war has seen Israel degrade much of Iran's air defenses and missile capabilities while Iranian proxies like Hezbollah launch rockets into northern Israel. Four people were wounded in a separate Hezbollah rocket strike on Kiryat Shmona near the Lebanon border Thursday evening. Israeli forces continued operations against Iranian targets, including missile factories and internal security sites, demonstrating sustained pressure despite the volleys.
