Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died after an Israeli Defense Forces strike hit his compound in Tehran, reducing parts of the site to rubble, according to an Israeli source. His death marks a historic turning point for the Islamic Republic, which he led for more than 30 years as its highest political and religious authority.

Born April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, Iran, Khamenei was a central figure in the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. A close ally of Ruhollah Khomeini, he rose through the ranks of the new regime, serving as president from 1981 to 1989 before assuming the role of supreme leader upon Khomeini’s death.

Over decades in power, Khamenei consolidated authority across Iran’s political, military, and intelligence institutions. His tenure was marked by strict social controls, aggressive suppression of dissent, and an uncompromising posture toward the United States and Israel. International rights organizations repeatedly cited Iran for high execution rates and harsh crackdowns on protest movements.

Mass demonstrations erupted in 2009 following disputed presidential elections that returned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to office, sparking what became known as the Green Movement. Security forces forcefully suppressed the unrest. In 2022, nationwide protests broke out after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in morality police custody, triggering another sweeping crackdown that drew global condemnation.

Regionally, Khamenei invested heavily in a network of allied militias and armed groups designed to extend Iranian influence beyond its borders. Tehran provided support to Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi fighters in Yemen, and various militias in Iraq, channeling substantial financial and military assistance into what it called its “axis of resistance.”

In recent years, however, Iranian-backed forces faced mounting pressure from Israeli military operations, particularly following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent regional conflict. Israeli strikes during a 12-day confrontation in June 2025 reportedly eliminated several senior Iranian figures close to Khamenei.

His death leaves uncertainty over succession within Iran’s clerical establishment and raises questions about the future direction of the regime at a moment of heightened military confrontation and domestic unrest.
