The Japanese Embassy has announced that Japan is gifting the United States an additional 250 cherry blossom trees to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, symbolizing the long-standing friendship and cultural ties between the two countries.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has cultivated a close working relationship with President Donald Trump, with both leaders publicly affirming the strength of the U.S.–Japan alliance and cooperation on trade, defense, and regional security. During a high-level summit in Tokyo in 2025, Trump praised Takaichi’s leadership and emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral ties.
The new plantings will supplement the iconic cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C., which have been a centerpiece of U.S.–Japan relations since the original gift in 1912. Embassy officials said the trees will be planted in public spaces across the country, allowing communities nationwide to participate in the celebration.
The gift reflects a continued commitment to cultural diplomacy and shared history, highlighting the enduring partnership between the United States and Japan as America commemorates its semiquincentennial.
