Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who became leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in October, won a commanding victory in a snap election, surpassing the 310 seats needed for a supermajority in the 465-seat lower house, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. The result allows her coalition to override the upper house, where it does not hold a majority.
Exit polls projected the LDP would win around 321 seats, while its coalition with Ishin was expected to secure between 302 and 366 seats. The far-right Sanseito party, which campaigned on a “Japanese first” platform, increased its representation but fell short of its 30-seat target.
Speaking at LDP headquarters, Takaichi emphasized fiscal responsibility and said she did not plan a major cabinet reshuffle. Her victory, marked by a Japanese tradition of paper flowers for each winning candidate, reflected strong support from younger voters, many drawn to her personal style and media presence, dubbed “Sanamania.”
Takaichi’s election comes amid heightened security concerns in the Indo-Pacific. She has taken a firm stance on Taiwan, prompting tensions with China, which responded with trade restrictions and travel warnings. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te congratulated Takaichi, emphasizing regional peace and prosperity.
The prime minister has cultivated a close relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who endorsed her on Truth Social, praising her leadership and announcing a planned White House meeting. U.S. Ambassador George Glass also welcomed the election results, citing opportunities to deepen bilateral ties.
Takaichi’s appeal extends beyond policy. Her energetic image, social media savvy, and unique personal style have helped her connect with voters, particularly the younger demographic. Despite a male-dominated political landscape and a cabinet with only two women, Takaichi’s combination of personality and political strategy delivered one of the most decisive election wins in recent Japanese history.
