Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was briefly hospitalized last month after falling ill during a Federalist Society dinner in Philadelphia, according to multiple reports.
Alito, 76, attended the March 20 event, where he was scheduled to deliver a keynote address but ultimately did not speak. Attendees reported that he appeared tired and less engaged than usual, remaining seated as others approached him during the gathering.
A Supreme Court spokesperson said Alito “felt ill during an event in Philadelphia” and, “out of an abundance of caution,” followed the recommendation of his security detail to seek medical evaluation before returning home to Virginia. He was treated for dehydration and given fluids at a hospital before being released later that night.
The spokesperson added that Alito was later evaluated by his personal physician and returned to work the following Monday, participating in oral arguments as scheduled. Earlier on the day of the incident, Alito had been present for the release of a unanimous Supreme Court decision in a case involving free speech rights, and the justices also held their regular private conference that afternoon.
Since the episode, Alito has continued his normal duties on the bench and has not shown any visible signs of ongoing health issues.
The incident comes as Alito recently marked 20 years on the Supreme Court and faces ongoing speculation about a potential retirement, though he has not publicly addressed those reports.
