White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down from her position at the end of August to spend more time with her two young children, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday.

President Trump said Leavitt will remain involved as one of his top outside advisers following her departure from the White House podium.

“Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family,” Trump said in a social media post. He added that Leavitt had been “a real leader in the White House” and praised her performance as press secretary.

Leavitt, 28, has served as White House press secretary since Trump returned to office in January 2025. She previously worked in the White House during Trump’s first term and later served as national press secretary for his 2024 presidential campaign.

“Serving as the White House Press Secretary over the past year and a half has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” Leavitt said in a statement. She thanked Trump for giving her the opportunity to speak on his behalf from the White House podium, travel internationally, and spend time in the Oval Office.

Leavitt gave birth to her second child, a daughter named Viviana, or “Vivi,” on May 1. She briefly took maternity leave before returning to her White House duties.

Leavitt said that after returning to work following the birth of her daughter, she realized she could not be the mother she wanted to be while also meeting the demands of the press secretary position.

“Since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary,” she said.

Trump asked Leavitt to continue serving as a top outside adviser, allowing her to remain involved with the administration while spending more time with her family.

Leavitt also said she will continue supporting Trump, the MAGA movement, and the Republican Party.

“My fight is entering a new phase, but it is far from over,” she said.
