A Loyola University Chicago student was shot and killed early Thursday in a late-night attack near the school’s Lake Shore campus, authorities said.

The victim, 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, was walking with friends in the Rogers Park neighborhood when a masked gunman approached and opened fire. She was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. near West Pratt Boulevard, with a campus alert also placing the incident near Pratt Avenue Beach along Lake Michigan. The suspect, described as wearing a face covering, fled the scene and has not been identified. Police have not announced any arrests.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and examining whether the incident may be connected to other recent violent crimes in the area. The motive remains unclear.

University President Mark C. Reed called the death a “tragic loss” in a message to students and staff, offering condolences to the victim’s family and friends. The university said it is working closely with law enforcement and does not believe there is an ongoing threat to campus.

Counseling services have been made available for students, and a vigil is scheduled at Madonna della Strada Chapel as the campus community mourns. Authorities continue to search for the suspect and urge anyone with information to come forward.
