Puerto Rico experienced tremors Thursday morning after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck in the Atlantic Ocean north of the island.
The quake occurred at approximately 10:18 a.m. local time and was centered about 98 miles north of Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Data from the agency indicated the earthquake had a depth of roughly 19.5 miles.
Residents reported weak to light shaking across parts of the island following the event. As of Thursday, no injuries or structural damage had been reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey notes that seismic activity is common in the Caribbean region due to interactions among multiple tectonic plates. Since late January, several smaller earthquakes ranging from magnitude 2.0 to 4.4 have occurred in or near Puerto Rico.
