A 27-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he stole a vehicle with a 12-year-old boy inside and then leapt from the car while it was still in motion on Chicago’s Near West Side.
According to CWB Chicago, the incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Prosecutors said a 34-year-old father briefly stepped away from his 2014 Hyundai Elantra, leaving his son seated in the back.
Moments later, Jordan Miller of East Chicago, Indiana, allegedly entered the vehicle and drove southbound on Milwaukee Avenue with the child still inside. It was not immediately clear whether the car was left unlocked or running.
Authorities said the boy questioned Miller about his father’s whereabouts. Prosecutors allege Miller pushed the child back into his seat and threw the boy’s phone out of the vehicle.
Shortly afterward, Miller allegedly jumped out of the Hyundai without placing it in park. The unmanned car continued rolling before crashing into another vehicle in the 900 block of West Fry Street, less than half a mile from where it was taken.
Emergency crews transported the 12-year-old to Lurie Children’s Hospital for evaluation of head, back, and eye pain. His condition has not been described as life-threatening.
Police said officers located Miller in the 1000 block of West Chicago Avenue after he matched descriptions provided by the child and witnesses. Investigators also recovered surveillance footage that allegedly tied him to the theft.
Miller was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment of cuts to his left hand and was later released into police custody.
He has been charged with robbery, aggravated kidnapping of a child under 13, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Cook County Jail records show Miller was booked Sunday and is being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 13.
Judge Anthony Calabrese ordered him detained pending trial.
