Twelve people suffered minor injuries after a masked man allegedly set off a device and threatened passengers aboard a high-speed train in western Germany on Thursday night.
The incident occurred on ICE 19, a long-distance train operated by Deutsche Bahn, as it traveled toward Frankfurt. The train was stopped at the Siegburg-Bonn station in the city of Siegburg, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, following the disturbance.
Authorities said the suspect threatened to attack, igniting what officials described as firecrackers. Local reports indicated passengers heard an explosion in one of the train’s carriages and saw smoke in the area. The device was believed to be a soft-air grenade, which scattered small pellets upon detonation.
According to reports, the explosion caused minor injuries to 12 passengers, primarily from the pellets. Approximately 500 people were evacuated from the train as emergency responders and police launched a large-scale response around 9 p.m. Train services were temporarily suspended.
Before police arrived, passengers intervened and managed to overpower the suspect, forcing him into a restroom and locking him inside until authorities took him into custody.
Local media identified the suspect as a 20-year-old German man. He was reportedly carrying a large knife in his backpack and had allegedly told passengers he intended to kill them. The incident remains under investigation.
