Ten people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and nearly 30 others were injured following a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in northeastern British Columbia on Tuesday. Police said officers responded around 1:20 p.m. local time after receiving reports of an active shooter at the school. An emergency phone alert was issued as law enforcement arrived on scene.

According to authorities, officers entered the building and discovered six victims deceased inside the school. The individual believed responsible was also located inside and appeared to have died from a self-inflicted injury. In an initial alert, police described the suspect as a female with brown hair wearing a dress. Officials have not publicly released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive.

Medical personnel reported that two victims were airlifted to a regional hospital in critical condition, while another died during transport. Approximately 25 additional individuals were treated at a local medical center for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators later identified a second crime scene at a nearby residence, where two more victims were found dead. Officers conducted additional searches in the surrounding area to determine whether anyone else may have been involved, though police indicated they believe the suspect acted alone.

The attack ranks among the deadliest mass killings in Canada’s history. The country’s deadliest mass shooting occurred in 2020 in Nova Scotia, leaving 22 people dead. The most lethal school shooting in Canada remains the 1989 attack at Montreal’s École Polytechnique, where 14 women were killed.

Tumbler Ridge is a remote community located roughly 700 miles north of Vancouver. A Grade 12 student said classrooms were placed under lockdown for more than two hours before officers escorted students to safety.

Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered flags on federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff, and question period in Parliament was canceled. Leaders across Canada and internationally, including King Charles, expressed condolences and solidarity with the affected community as the investigation continues.
