McDonald's has started eliminating self-serve soda fountains from its U.S. restaurants nationwide, shifting to crew-prepared drinks behind the counter. The change, years in the planning, aims for full implementation by 2032 during routine remodels and updates.

In many locations, customers already request refills from staff rather than using the machines themselves. The move addresses maintenance costs, hygiene concerns that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, and issues like product loss from overuse or theft. It also supports McDonald's focus on drive-thru, delivery, and digital orders, which now dominate sales and reduce the need for dine-in features.

The company first signaled the phase-out in 2023, citing the need for consistent experiences across ordering channels. Self-serve stations accelerated during that period for sanitation reasons and have not fully returned in some areas. Franchisees and operators report greater control over portions, inventory, and cleanliness with staff handling drinks via automated systems.

McDonald's emphasized its beverage strategy in a recent statement to Fox Business. "Our fans’ love for McDonald’s beverages runs deep… Next month, we’re building on that passion with a new era of beverages, featuring a variety of Refreshers and crafted sodas rolling out nationwide," the company said. These include flavors like mango pineapple refresher with strawberry boba and dirty Dr Pepper with vanilla and cold foam, launching May 6.

Customers will lose the ability to customize and refill drinks independently in dining rooms, a staple for decades. Free refills remain available upon request. The shift aligns with industry trends, as chains prioritize speed and efficiency amid declining in-store traffic.

Reports indicate early removals in Illinois and western states, with more locations transitioning. McDonald's operates over 13,000 U.S. outlets, most franchised, allowing staggered rollouts. The change supports the "Accelerating the Arches" growth plan, targeting digital loyalty and streamlined service.
