Michael B. Jordan won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the 32nd Actor Awards for his portrayal of twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore in Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," while the film also secured the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award.
The ceremony took place Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, hosted by Kristen Bell. Viola Davis presented the lead actor category and let out a joyful scream upon announcing Jordan's name, drawing a rousing reaction from the crowd. Jordan, appearing surprised, described the win as unexpected during his acceptance speech. "I don’t even know where to begin. I wasn’t expecting this at all," he said.
He beat nominees Timothée Chalamet in "Marty Supreme," Leonardo DiCaprio in "One Battle After Another," Ethan Hawke in "Blue Moon," and Jesse Plemons in "Bugonia." This marked Jordan's first individual Actor Award win, following an ensemble victory for "Black Panther" in 2019. In his speech, the Newark native thanked his mother, Donna, for driving him to New York auditions despite financial struggles. "Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn’t have enough money to go through the Holland Tunnel," he recalled. Jordan also praised director Ryan Coogler, with whom he has collaborated five times, for fostering a safe space on set.
Delroy Lindo accepted the ensemble award on behalf of the cast, dedicating it to their shared journey under Coogler's direction. "Sinners" triumphed over nominees including "One Battle After Another," "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme," and "Frankenstein."
Set in 1930s Jim Crow-era Mississippi, "Sinners" follows the World War I veteran twins as they return home, open a juke joint, and confront vampires. The supernatural thriller grossed $369 million worldwide after its 2025 release and earned a record 16 Oscar nominations, the most in Academy history, with Jordan receiving his first Best Actor nod ahead of the March 15 ceremony.
The double win positions "Sinners" as a frontrunner for Oscars, particularly Best Picture, following precedents like past Actor Awards ensemble victors. Jordan called the Oscar recognition emotional, noting its resonance with audiences. "It’s really a testament to the film as a whole," he said.
