Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks secured the Republican nomination in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, setting up a third general election rematch with Democratic nominee Christina Bohannan.

Miller-Meeks defeated primary challenger David Pautsch, while Bohannan won her Democratic primary contest against Travis Terrell.

Miller-Meeks, a physician and three-term Republican congresswoman, will now defend her seat in a district that has proven highly competitive in recent election cycles. Bohannan, a University of Iowa law professor and former state legislator, has previously challenged Miller-Meeks twice and now enters the race for a third time.

In the 2024 election, Bohannan narrowly lost to Miller-Meeks by roughly 800 votes, underscoring the tight margin that has defined recent contests in the district.

The upcoming rematch is expected to be one of the more closely watched House races in Iowa, as both parties target competitive suburban and mixed districts that could help determine control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Miller-Meeks has emphasized her record in Congress and alignment with Republican priorities, while Bohannan has focused her campaigns on education, healthcare, and reproductive rights issues.

With both nominees now set, the general election campaign is expected to intensify as voters in Iowa’s 1st District prepare for another closely contested race between the two candidates.
