Authorities in St. Cloud, Minnesota, reported that Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, the daughter of Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson, was fatally stabbed in a suspected botched murder-suicide. Police said the incident occurred at a residence on the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South around 8:20 p.m. following a reported medical emergency.
Investigators found Hallie Tobler with multiple stab wounds and her husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, at the scene with injuries authorities believe were self-inflicted. Hallie was pronounced dead and transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Dylan was taken to St. Cloud Hospital in stable condition before being placed in the custody of the St. Cloud Police Department. He is expected to be charged in connection with the homicide and will be held at the Stearns County Jail.
The Minnesota Republican Party expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. “There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family,” the party said in a statement. “The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.”
Out of respect for his family, Johnson has suspended his campaign for governor. His official campaign page was removed by Tuesday morning following the incident.
The St. Cloud Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, which has sent shockwaves through the Minnesota political community. Officials emphasized that the case appears to be a domestic matter and not related to any public activity or campaign events.
