Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly encouraging California Gov. Gavin Newsom to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2028, according to sources cited by Axios.

The push is said to stem from Pelosi’s longstanding political alliance with Newsom, dating back to his tenure as San Francisco mayor. Sources note that Pelosi’s extensive donor network and influence in Democratic politics could play a key role in positioning Newsom on the national stage.

A former aide described Pelosi as a “Gavin fan-girl,” noting her admiration for leaders she believes demonstrate strategic skill and resilience. Pelosi has reportedly praised Newsom for navigating the Trump era “with a combination of defiance and charm,” and characterized his leadership as “masterful” in interviews with both The New Yorker and Vogue. She has also noted his political growth and strong family life as factors enhancing his public image.

A spokesperson for Pelosi declined to comment on the reports. Newsom’s team, through spokesperson Lindsey Cobia, said the governor has long celebrated Pelosi’s public service. “Gov. Newsom believes Speaker Pelosi is the epitome of selfless public service and will go down in history as one of the most consequential leaders of our time,” Cobia said.

Pelosi’s endorsement, if it continues to be cultivated, could strengthen Newsom’s position within the Democratic Party and help him consolidate support among donors and party leaders ahead of the 2028 election.
