Netflix warned ByteDance that its AI platform, Seedance 2.0, may be infringing copyright by using the streaming service’s intellectual property to generate unauthorized derivative works. The company cited examples from Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters, Squid Game, and Bridgerton, noting that some AI-generated videos included detailed reproductions of costumes and characters from the shows.
“Seedance acts as a high-speed piracy engine, generating mass quantities of unauthorized derivative works utilizing Netflix’s iconic characters, worlds, and scripted narratives,” said Mindy LeMoine, Netflix’s director of litigation. She added that ByteDance had promoted the content through social media using official hashtags like #Bridgerton.
Netflix has given ByteDance three days to respond to the cease-and-desist letter. The move follows similar actions from Disney, Paramount, and Warner Bros., who have accused the company of misappropriating intellectual property for its AI outputs.
Recently, a viral Seedance 2.0 clip featuring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in a photorealistic fight sparked condemnation from the Motion Picture Association, which called the platform a disregard of copyright law protecting creators and American jobs. Netflix’s legal warning signals an escalating effort by major studios to hold AI companies accountable for intellectual property misuse.
