Authorities identified Madelyn Eitas as the victim of an avalanche that struck Brighton Ski Resort in Brighton, Utah, around 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 19. The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake said the girl’s family and more than 20 local citizens had begun initial search efforts before first responders arrived.
Cameron Eitas, Madelyn’s brother, was credited with heroically locating her using an application that authorities did not specify. First responders performed life-saving measures before transporting her to a nearby hospital, where she died.
The girl was remembered for her love of soccer, family, and friends. She was an active member of the 6th grade travel team with the Marine Soccer team, which described her as a bright and beloved teammate whose loss has deeply affected the community.
The Rochester, Massachusetts Police Department offered condolences to the family and encouraged the community to provide support during the difficult time, calling her death “a life so young, full of promise, kindness, and joy, taken far too soon.”
Madelyn’s death follows another fatal snow slide in Utah on Feb. 18, when a father was killed while snowmobiling with his son west of Midway. Authorities said these incidents highlight the dangers of winter recreation in avalanche-prone areas.
