New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill was met with sustained boos Wednesday night as she took part in a ceremonial puck drop at the Prudential Center in Newark. The event marked the return of Jack Hughes and other Olympians to National Hockey League play following Team USA’s gold medal victory.

The crowd reaction came after Sherrill was introduced over the public address system alongside her husband, Jason Hedberg. Fans had gathered to celebrate Hughes’ game-winning goal against Canada in Sunday’s Olympic championship and to honor players representing multiple countries during the 2026 Games.

Despite the reception, Sherrill later posted photos from the ceremony on social media showing her with Hughes and other athletes. Online responses referenced the audible boos that echoed through the arena.

Sherrill has drawn criticism in recent months on several fronts. During her 2025 campaign, reports resurfaced regarding disciplinary action at the U.S. Naval Academy that prevented her from participating in commencement exercises. Sherrill stated at the time that she graduated and was commissioned as a Navy officer, serving nearly 10 years.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against New Jersey and Sherrill, alleging that a new executive order expands sanctuary policies and obstructs federal immigration enforcement. State officials have defended their policies as lawful.

The pregame ceremony proceeded without disruption, with the New Jersey Devils honoring their Olympians before facing the Buffalo Sabres. Hughes received the loudest applause of the night, as fans chanted “U-S-A!” in celebration of Team USA’s gold medal performance.

Hughes appeared emotional while addressing the crowd, thanking supporters and expressing pride in representing both the Devils organization and the state of New Jersey.
