Police in Huber Heights said an officer initiated a traffic stop Monday, but the driver fled the scene on foot. Authorities said the officer briefly lost sight of the suspect but quickly established a perimeter in the surrounding apartment complex.
According to police, the suspect managed to make it several apartments away before officers closed in. That’s when the pursuit took an unexpected turn.
“As luck would have it, ‘Oscar the Grouch,' as we’ve nicknamed our suspect, appeared at just the right place and the right time,” police said in a statement.
Body camera footage shows a sanitation worker emptying trash behind a garbage truck when he suddenly recoils and points toward a trash bin he had just opened. Seconds later, the suspect pops up from inside the container, jumps out, and sprints away in a last-ditch effort to avoid arrest.
Police credited a second responding officer’s “impressive athletic ability and swift response” for quickly apprehending the suspect after the brief dash. Authorities said he was taken into custody without injury to anyone involved.
Local outlet WHIO-TV reported that the suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Jonathan McMillan. He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest. The station added that McMillan also had an outstanding warrant from Miami County.
Despite the chaotic sequence of events, including hiding inside a trash bin and triggering a foot chase, McMillan reportedly received only a warning for the original traffic violation that prompted the stop.
