An explosion tore through the Dali nightclub in Trujillo, northern Peru, early Saturday morning, injuring 33 people including three minors, authorities reported.
The blast occurred in the pre-dawn hours during a cumbia music performance at the venue in the Víctor Larco Herrera district of Trujillo province, in the La Libertad region about 500 kilometers north of Lima. No fatalities were reported, but at least five victims remained in serious condition, with some undergoing surgery for amputations and shrapnel wounds.
Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, told reporters that the injured included a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds. "Some of the victims suffered amputations and shrapnel wounds and are undergoing surgery," he said. One witness, Fiorella Mantilla, described the moment: "It sounded as if the sound system had suddenly been turned off," after which she found glass embedded in her legs.
The local Emergency Operations Center confirmed the details in a statement, while the La Libertad regional government labeled it a suspected attack. Police launched an investigation, but the cause and perpetrators remained unclear hours later.
The incident fits a pattern of violence in Trujillo, which has been under a state of emergency since March 2025 due to extortion rackets and contract killings linked to organized crime groups such as Los Pulpos. The region, a hub for illegal gold mining, recorded 286 explosions in 2025, with 136 in Trujillo alone. Less than a month earlier, another blast in the city damaged 25 homes but caused no injuries.
The Dali nightclub itself had been targeted before. On Valentine's Day in February, assailants hurled tear gas bombs at the venue, according to local reports. Authorities suspect extortion as a possible motive, as criminal gangs have expanded activities across northern Peru and into neighboring countries.
The National Police continued to probe the scene Saturday, with armed forces assisting under the ongoing emergency measures. Victims were treated at nearby hospitals, and no further updates on their conditions were available by afternoon.
