Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, confirmed Thursday that he will not compete in this year’s tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. In a statement on social media, Mickelson said he is stepping away to support his family amid a health issue.
“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson wrote. “I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”
Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley also expressed support, noting, “We know how much Phil loves the Masters tournament, and he will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week. He has our complete support as he takes time to be with his family.”
Mickelson, 55, has already missed four LIV Golf events this year while addressing the family health matter. He most recently competed in South Africa, leading his HyFlyers GC squad before finishing tied for 48th.
His withdrawal comes shortly after Tiger Woods announced he would step away from golf to seek treatment following a DUI arrest after a rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida. Woods, a 15-time major winner and five-time Masters champion, and Mickelson were long-standing rivals at the top of professional golf. Mickelson won six majors during his career and was consistently one of Woods’ toughest competitors.
With both icons absent, the 90th edition of the Masters, set to begin Thursday, April 9, will proceed without two of the game’s most recognizable names.
