A new national survey from RMG Research shows a clear majority of Americans now support President Donald J. Trump’s proposal for the United States to pursue a strategic deal involving Greenland. The poll, conducted January 26 among 1,000 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent, found that 55 percent favor the proposal, while 27 percent oppose it and 18 percent remain undecided, reflecting a notable shift in public opinion and growing acceptance of the America First strategy to strengthen U.S. influence in the Arctic and counter foreign adversaries.
Support was strongest among Republicans, with 82 percent in favor. A majority of independents also backed the proposal at 56 percent. Democrats were more divided, with 38 percent supporting the idea and 48 percent opposed.
The poll represents a significant increase from surveys conducted in late 2025, when public support hovered in the low to mid 40 percent range. Analysts say the shift suggests Trump’s repeated emphasis on Greenland’s strategic importance has resonated with a broader segment of voters.
The administration has highlighted Greenland’s value in securing rare earth minerals critical for defense systems and advanced technology, strengthening Arctic military and naval positioning, expanding energy independence, and limiting growing Chinese and Russian activity in the region.
President Trump first raised the idea of acquiring Greenland during his first term in 2019, framing it as a strategic real estate and national security opportunity. He revived the proposal after returning to office in 2025, arguing that either direct U.S. control or a long-term strategic partnership with Denmark would better protect American interests in the rapidly changing Arctic.
With polar routes opening due to warming temperatures and global competition intensifying, supporters say Greenland represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to solidify U.S. dominance in a region increasingly targeted by Beijing and Moscow.
The new polling suggests that what was once dismissed by critics as unconventional is now being viewed by a majority of Americans as a serious and forward-looking national security strategy.
