President Donald Trump on Tuesday called Joe Kent "very weak on security" after Kent resigned as director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Trump took issue with Kent’s reported assessment that Iran did not pose a significant threat, saying the country’s dangers were recognized internationally.

"Iran was a threat. Every country realized what a threat Iran was," Trump said at a press conference, noting that differences among nations centered on how to respond rather than whether the threat existed.

Kent’s resignation follows escalating tensions over U.S. policy toward Iran. Officials familiar with the matter said Kent opposed parts of the administration’s approach, particularly analyses portraying Iran as an immediate danger. His stance reportedly conflicted with senior policymakers advocating a stronger, more assertive posture.

A former military and intelligence official, Kent had led the National Counterterrorism Center since his appointment early in Trump’s term. His departure highlights ongoing disagreements within the national security community over evaluating and responding to Iran.

The White House has not announced a successor.
