A private aircraft carrying eight people crashed on takeoff Sunday night at Maine’s Bangor International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. The Bombardier Challenger 600 went down around 7:45 p.m., though the conditions of those aboard were not immediately known. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations.
The crash occurred amid a massive winter storm affecting New England and much of the eastern U.S., which brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Bangor International, located about 200 miles north of Boston and offering flights to cities including Orlando, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, was closed while emergency crews responded.
The storm has disrupted travel nationwide, canceling roughly 12,000 flights and delaying nearly 20,000 more, with major hubs including Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, New York, and airports across North Carolina and New Jersey heavily impacted.
The Bombardier Challenger 600, a wide-bodied business jet for nine to 11 passengers, debuted in 1980 as the first private jet with a “walk-about cabin” and remains a popular charter option.
